Roger & Shawna Cain (Cherokee)
A Life Built Around River Cane Basketry

Roger and Shawna Cain working on a basketThroughout their month-long visit, Roger and Shawna Cain shared the artistry and stories of their Cherokee heritage.  They work together to create beautiful baskets made from river cane, a plant native to North America that is similar to bamboo. Their work involves the harvest and preparation of materials as well as the basket weaving and finishing.

Both of the Cains are studying for advanced degrees in environmental studies and have also put a great deal of time into learning from the elders of their tribe.  They spoke often of the importance of learning from the elders, and they see river cane as an important plant environmentally in addition to its utility.  As they work, they look to both the past and the future.
