Anita Fields (Osage)
Contemporary Art Forms to Convey a Traditional Story

Photo of Anita FieldsAnita Fields spent her month-long residency at the Eiteljorg creating an installation of ceramics to illustrate the Osage creation story.  In addition to forming some of the components herself, Anita worked with a number of different groups to make hundreds of small clay pieces - birds, raindrops, shells, acorns, mushrooms and the like.  This was truly a collective creation.

The resulting artwork, titled Considering the Earth and Above, depicts aspects of the earth and sky worlds.  According to the creation story, different peoples came from these worlds and joined together to become the Osage people.  This beautiful piece is alive with texture, a signature of Anita’s work in clay.
