  • Time:  10:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Marketing & Communications Intern (Unpaid)

The Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art seeks a highly motivated college student to assist the Marketing & Communications Department in its efforts to promote and raise awareness of the museum’s events, exhibits and programs during a summer internship. Through the internship, a student will have the opportunity to learn practical, valuable professional workplace skills that will bolster any resume.

Typically this position would be 20 hours per week during business hours on weekdays, but will involve working certain required events on weekends and evenings, such as during the Indian Market and Festival on June 22-24, and during the Summer Under The Sails concerts on Wednesday evenings in June and July. As the position is based in the Eiteljorg Museum in downtown Indianapolis, the applicant must have reliable transportation to and from the museum. The internship would last from approximately late May until early August 2018, but can be adjusted depending on the applicant’s college calendar and requirements.

The applicant should be an enrolled university student or recent graduate majoring in communications, digital marketing, journalism, public relations, advertising, tourism or a related field. The applicant should have experience with social media and social media marketing, as well as Microsoft Office software, Adobe Suite software, and experience with photography and video production. Additional experience with html/css website design is preferred.

Responsibilities will revolve around helping execute various facets of marketing communications plans and working to achieve marketing and museum goals and objectives. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assisting the Marketing & Communications staff with marketing tasks at summer events outdoors and indoors
  • Contacting media outlets to pitch museum exhibits and events
  • Implementing creative projects
  • Assisting in maintaining the museum’s regular presence on multiple social media platforms
  • Organizing office files and materials
  • Delivering or distributing printed materials off-site
  • Attending regular meetings internally and with external tourism groups to maintain marketing visibility, and other duties as assigned.

Other qualities the Eiteljorg Museum is seeking in an intern are:  reliability, dependability, self-confidence, good verbal and written skills, a pleasant, professional demeanor, strong time-management skills, ability to follow specific directions, willingness to take on assignments that have tight deadlines, a flexible schedule, a desire to learn from experienced colleagues and the ability to work cooperatively with people of many backgrounds. The intern must follow all museum policies and procedures in the museum employee handbook.

This is an unpaid position, but the intern selected will have access to certain cost-saving privileges, including free parking 24/7 at the museum’s underground parking garage at a prime location in White River State Park, free admission to the museum and museum programs, discounts to the museum café and store, and discounts to other participating Indianapolis museums and attractions. During the internship, the marketing intern will be able to attend and enjoy one or more of the Eiteljorg’s high-quality receptions. There are many intangible benefits, including the opportunity to interact with and learn from museum executives and curatorial staff about the nonprofit world, attend informal orientation sessions, hone professional office skills, build a portfolio, develop a professional network and acquire effective job references. While gaining this valuable job experience, the intern will get to work in a beautiful museum building surrounding by amazing art and history while working with some talented colleagues. The museum can attempt to schedule internship hours to coordinate with any outside employment the intern might have.

Although the Eiteljorg Museum cannot guarantee that an intern will receive college credit for the internship, the Marketing & Communications staff will be happy to coordinate with the intern’s faculty advisor to provide documentation that might assist in the student receiving academic credit for their work.

The deadline to apply is March 29, 2018.  Qualified applicants should send a resume, a cover letter and three writing or project samples as well as contact information for three professional references to this address:
